Gaim 2.0.0beta6 was released a couple of days ago. People using Feisty the fawn are already able to get it from the official ubuntu repository.
If you are running Edgy Eft, you can get the latest release of gaim as a .deb from Debuntu .deb repository.
This new package actually includes support for NetworkManager through DBus. This feature was introduce in gaim 2.0.0beta4.
Here is the description of this feature (citing Sean Egan):
Another application that lives in the "system tray," even when it doesn't have any urgent notifications, is NetworkManager. NetworkManager is a really cool system that makes connecting to various networks on Linux really, really easy. It also provides a way for an application to be informed when the network status changes: when a cable is unplugged, when you connect to a wireless networ, etc.
Thanks to work by Paul Betts, Gaim can now talk to NetworkManager when connecting to IM services. Before it logs in, it will make sure you're connected to the network and, if not, connect you as soon as the network comes available. When the network goes away, Gaim will disconnect; when it comes back, it will reconnect.
If you are using nautilus-sendto plugin on edgy, please disable it or you might face this
If you use a lot of plugins which are not yet post gaim 2.0.0beta4 API compliant, chances are that your plugins won't work anymore.

64 bit Feisty
How to update in 64 bit feisty? Added repository and get this:
Failed to fetch http://repository.debuntu.org/dists/feisty/Release Unable to find expected entry multiverse/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Need sametime capabilities. Please advise. Thanks!!
There is no 64bits packages
There is no 64bits packages available for feisty on repository.debuntu.org, this is why you get such error.
As I don't have any 64 bits architecture, I can't build such package. I guess getdeb might e a good place to look for such package.

Meanwhile and gaim_2.0.0+beta6
I have added reps to my sources, apt-get update, removed gaim, installed ubuntu-desktop and it installed the beta6 version of gaim. Very cool. But how do I use it with SameTime? I don't see meanwhile or sametime listed as a protocol. Any advice? Thanks for the repository and packages!
I figured it out. I had to
I figured it out. I had to install the meanwhile libs and reinstall gaim.
Thanks!
No PPC versions
Oh dear how sad, never mind (or something like that)
Yes, I'm sad enough to be running Edgy on a Powerbook Pismo...
OTR-Plugin
The Gaim OTR-Plugin gets deactivated when installing Beta 6 in Edgy. It displays "You're using gtk-gaim, but this plugin requires gtk.".
update uploaded
Since gaim 2beta4, the API has changed. I've just synced feisty package for gaim-otr.
It is up on debuntu repository.
Hope this helps

Same with guifications and encryption
I have the same problems with guifications and encryption plugins found in ubuntu repositories.
Because gaim API changed
Because gaim API changed since beta4, it is most likely that plugins using prior beta4 API will be broken under gaim 2 beta6.

TLS support missing
The TLS support is missing in this build. Was it intentional ?
Not enabled, but you can give it a try
Hi komuta,
This package is actually a port of the official package for feisty. The feisty package does not have any TLS support either and it is intentionnaly disabled by the official maintener. I'm never used TLS and I don't even know if it has ever being enable in any ubuntu packages.
Sorry for that. But, if you want to give it a try, just download the package source (apt-get source gaim), then, cd gaim-2.0.0+beta6 and edit file "debian/rules" and change --enable-gnutls=no to --enable-gnutls=yes.
You need to make sure that you have got libgnutls-dev, fakeroot and dpkg-dev installed on your computer.
Once you got everything ready, run:
in gaim-2.0.0+beta6 directory. When finished, your .deb packages should be ready in the parent directory.
Hope this helps

Gaim 2.0.0 beta 6 for Dapper?
Hi,
I'm still running Dapper, for various reasons (lack of Internet connectivity for one), and I'd really like a Dapper .deb. Please could you provide one?
Thanks for providing this invaluable resource!
Dapper packages
I've successfully built Dapper packages, although I have no ICQ listed as available network :/
Is the ICQ network dependant on the Xulrunner? I used the --enable-nss=no build flag since xulrunner is not available on Dapper and would like to know if that is causing ICQ being disabled?
Oh, I did enable gnutls tho, as reported by the configure script:
SSL Library/Libraries......... : GnuTLS
What else do I need to make ICQ work?
segfaults on start
hi. This packages segfaults on start, backtrace at
http://chuff.silur.de/gdb-gaim.txt
with gui error message at
http://chuff.silur.de/gaim-error.png
(this is german and translates to: Unable to add Buddy 1 (Reason unknown). Most common reason is that you exceeded the maximum number of buddies on your buddy list)
I'll report that bug on the sf.net gaim bug tracker as well.
I've seen your bug report
Hi Christian,
I've seen your bug report on: gaim sourceforge.
When I ported this package, I had to change a conflict dependence from nautilus-sendto (<= 0.8-2ubuntu2) to nothing, because if I was not doing so, nautilus-sendto and ubuntu-desktop packages would have being removed.
Sorry for the troubles it caused you. I've added a mention telling people using nautilus-sendto to either disable it or not use this package :)

Network manager ?
I don't know if Network Manager is the source of my troubles, but since the beta 6 when I start gaim I have to disconnect my accounts and reconnect them.
If not gaim show a message «waiting for network connection»
Anyway thanks for the package ;)
show message but works fine
Hi Stemp,
Same here, it does actually show "waiting for network connection" but in my case I simply need to change status. Once connected, it is still written "waiting for network connection" even though I can send/receive messages.
By the way, this behavior is with "networkmanager support enabled" but I use a old fashion /etc/network/interfaces configuration.
